Greene County is a county located in the eastern Piedmont region of the State of Georgia, with an estimated population of approximately 18,000 residents. Established in 1786, Greene County is one of the oldest counties in the state and was named for General Nathanael Greene, a distinguished officer of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The county seat is Greensboro, a small city with a well-preserved historic downtown. Agriculture remains significant in the portions of the county away from the lake, with poultry production, cattle, timber, and row crops contributing to the rural economy. Timber production and forestry support local sawmill operations.
