Porterdale, Georgia

Newton County, Georgia · Population 1,799

Porterdale sits along the Yellow River in the southeastern corner of Newton County, roughly 35 miles east of Atlanta. The town grew up around a textile mill — the old mill village layout is still visible in the compact street grid and modest worker cottages that define much of the housing stock. Today Porterdale is one of the smaller municipalities in Newton County, dwarfed by the county seat of Covington just a few miles to the east. It draws people who want proximity to the Atlanta metro without metro prices, though the tradeoffs in income and services are real.

People & Demographics

Porterdale's ACS 2022 count puts the population at 1,602 residents in 635 households, with an average household size of 2.52. The median age is 42.7 — older than most growing suburban communities. The racial composition is roughly 59% white (948) and 35% Black (568), with 67 residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino. Children under 18 number 382, representing about 24% of the population.

Newton County as a whole holds 112,483 people, meaning Porterdale accounts for less than 2% of county residents. The county's growth pressure from Atlanta's eastward sprawl has largely bypassed this particular town.

Economy & Employment

The median household income is $36,563 — substantially below Georgia's statewide median, which consistently runs above $60,000. Per capita income sits at $18,265. Of the 1,602 residents counted, 537 fall below the federal poverty line, a poverty rate approaching one in three residents.

The labor force numbers 578, with 22 unemployed — an unemployment rate around 3.8% among those in the labor force. Those figures suggest the core issue isn't unemployment so much as the nature of available work: low-wage jobs that don't generate household income sufficient to clear the poverty threshold.

Housing

Porterdale has 710 housing units total. Of those, 635 are occupied and 75 sit vacant — a vacancy rate of about 10.6%. The split between owners and renters is notably skewed toward renters: 398 households rent (62.7%) versus 237 who own (37.3%). For a small mill town, that ratio reflects the legacy of company housing and the economic profile of current residents.

The median home value is $119,800, which is low by any Georgia standard but has been climbing as Atlanta-area buyers look further afield. Median gross rent is $968 per month. For households earning the median income, rent at that level consumes a significant share of monthly take-home pay.

Schools

Porterdale falls within the Newton County School System. Students move through a county-wide network — there is no school physically located within Porterdale's city limits with separate enrollment data. Middle schools include Liberty Middle School (944 students), Indian Creek Middle School (814 students), Clements Middle School (754 students), Cousins Middle School (654 students), and Veterans Memorial Middle School (637 students).

The Newton County Theme School at Ficquett serves grades K–8 with 977 students and operates as the county's magnet-style option.

Getting Around

Of 556 workers, 400 drive alone to work — about 72%. Another 75 carpool. Zero workers use public transit; there is none. Twenty-seven people walk to work, which makes sense given the compact mill-town layout where some destinations are within walking distance. Forty-four people work from home.

Aggregate travel time for all workers totals 15,260 minutes, suggesting an average one-way commute around 27 minutes. Covington is close; Atlanta is reachable but not short. A car is non-negotiable for most daily life here.

The Yellow River itself, running through town, is the most immediate natural feature locally.

Natural Hazards

Newton County has accumulated a significant federal disaster declaration record. Hurricane remnants have reached this far inland — Hurricane Irma (2017) and Hurricane Helene (2024) both generated declarations, with Helene producing both an emergency declaration in September and a major disaster declaration the same month. Severe storms with tornadoes and straight-line winds brought declarations in 2011 and 2023. Winter storms have hit three times — 2000, 2014 (two declarations), and a 2026 severe winter storm declaration. Severe flooding events occurred in 2009 and 2016. The county also participated in Hurricane Katrina evacuation support in 2005. The pattern is clear: this part of Georgia gets winter ice, tropical remnants, and periodic tornado-producing storm systems.
