Chattooga County is a county in the northwest corner of Georgia with an estimated population of approximately 24,800 residents. Created in 1838 from portions of Floyd and Walker counties, the county takes its name from the Chattooga River (distinct from the Chattooga River of northeast Georgia made famous by the film "Deliverance"). The county seat is Summerville, a small city nestled in a scenic valley between Lookout Mountain and the lesser ridges of the Ridge and Valley province. Covering approximately 314 square miles, Chattooga County is characterized by its mountain scenery, textile manufacturing heritage, and the resilient character of its Appalachian foothill communities.
Geography and Physical Setting
Chattooga County lies within the Ridge and Valley physiographic province, bordered by Lookout Mountain to the west and a series of parallel ridges to the east. Taylor Ridge, a prominent linear ridge, runs through the eastern part of the county. Elevations range from approximately 600 feet in the river valley to over 2,000 feet atop Lookout Mountain.
